Human Rights Officer – Open-ended Position

About the role

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is seeking a Human Rights Officer to join its Human Rights Treaties Branch in Geneva. The position is open‑ended and full‑time, focusing on monitoring the implementation of human rights and international humanitarian law across civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct substantive monitoring of human rights and international humanitarian law implementation and follow up on recommendations from treaty bodies, the UPR and special procedures.
• Collect, document and analyse evidence‑based information on a range of rights to support early warning, accountability and decision‑making, ensuring data is gender‑sensitive and inclusive.
• Provide advisory and substantive support to national and regional counterparts to strengthen their human‑rights systems, including complaints mechanisms and victim support services.
• Offer substantive advisory assistance to civil‑society organisations on integrating human rights into protection, rule of law, transitional justice and accountability.
• Support treaty bodies, special procedures, the UPR and commissions of inquiry through research, coordination and follow‑up.
• Engage youth networks and conduct advocacy and outreach activities to promote human‑rights awareness.
• Contribute to partnership‑building activities and identification of collaborative opportunities.

Required profile

• Demonstrated experience in monitoring human‑rights implementation and analysing multi‑source information.
• Strong knowledge of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development.
• Experience providing advisory support to governments, regional bodies or civil‑society actors.
• Ability to work with gender‑perspective and “leave no one behind” approaches.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills for interaction with treaty bodies, special procedures and youth networks.
