Mechanical Engineer for ATLAS Detector Upgrade

About the role

CERN is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the ATLAS detector upgrade during Long Shutdown 3 (2026‑2030). You will act as the bridge between ATLAS Technical Coordination and the detector upgrade teams, ensuring seamless mechanical integration of new systems.

Key responsibilities

• Lead mechanical design of detector components in collaboration with international institutes.
• Define and manage mechanical interfaces between the ATLAS detector and its supporting infrastructure.
• Oversee production of 3D integration models and verify envelope constraints.
• Develop transport and underground installation sequences, including tooling design.
• Coordinate production schedules to guarantee timely delivery of mechanical parts.
• Participate in clean‑room assembly and supervise installation of service infrastructure such as cable trays and flexible chains.
• Supervise detector installation within the experimental cavern.

Required profile

• Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Solid experience in mechanical design, from 3D modelling to manufacturing drawings.
• Proven track record in installing high‑technology equipment with precise procedures and tooling.
• Experience in mechanical calculations and Finite Element Analysis.
• Background in writing installation procedures and managing projects (planning, procurement, reporting).
• Ability to coordinate designers and technicians within international, multidisciplinary teams.
