Legal Director, Sustainability

About the role

The Legal Director, Sustainability will support JTI’s Corporate Sustainability team and key business stakeholders in navigating complex sustainability frameworks. This senior position provides strategic legal guidance to ensure that business practices comply with applicable laws and regulations across the EU and Switzerland.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic advice on sustainability laws, regulations, standards and emerging expectations.
• Review public sustainability communications, claims, commitments and reports for legal compliance.
• Advise on corporate governance, board‑level sustainability oversight, director duties and stakeholder accountability.
• Support legal matters related to climate, environmental topics, product stewardship, circularity, biodiversity, waste and emissions.
• Translate complex legal requirements into practical, business‑oriented guidance.
• Design governance frameworks, controls, approval processes and risk‑escalation mechanisms to mitigate enforcement, litigation and reputational risks.
• Embed sustainability obligations in contracts and supply‑chain programs in collaboration with cross‑functional teams.
• Identify and mitigate green‑washing, social‑washing and reputational risks in external and internal communications.
• Monitor and interpret legal and regulatory developments across relevant jurisdictions.

Required profile

• Legal degree and qualification in good standing in at least one jurisdiction.
• Minimum 10 years of experience, including in‑house experience, preferably in consumer goods or food & beverage.
• Demonstrated experience advising on sustainability matters.
• Fluent written and verbal English.
• Deep understanding of EU and Swiss sustainability laws and regulations.
• Knowledge of OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
• Excellent communication, judgment and interpersonal skills.
