Legal Counsel – Gas & Power

About the role

This position provides hands‑on legal support to gas and power trading activities, initially focusing on financial trading and later expanding to physical trading as the business grows. Reporting to the Head of Legal, the role works closely with traders, operations, credit, risk, finance and compliance teams.

Key responsibilities

• Provide day‑to‑day legal advice on gas and power trading, with an emphasis on financial transactions.
• Draft, review and negotiate ISDA master agreements, schedules, confirmations and related credit support documents.
• Advise on legal issues arising from exchange‑traded and OTC transactions, including compliance with exchange rules.
• Support derivatives, collateral, guarantees and other credit support arrangements.
• Assist the business as it develops physical gas and power trading, reviewing trading agreements and operational contracts.
• Handle contractual matters such as non‑performance, defaults, termination, force majeure and disputes.
• Collaborate with trading, operations, credit, risk, finance and compliance to identify and manage legal risk while facilitating commercial activity.

Required profile

• Common‑law qualified lawyer with approximately 5‑7 years post‑qualification experience.
• Strong background in gas & power, energy or commodities trading.
• Hands‑on experience with ISDA documentation and derivatives trading.
• Good understanding of exchange‑traded activity and related legal issues.
• In‑house experience within a commodity trader, energy company or utility is advantageous.
• Fluent English; additional European languages are a plus.
