Backend Software Engineer - Data Processing Platform

About the role

You will join the Agile Data Processing team within CERN's Controls Software & Services group to design, develop, test and maintain the Data Processing Platform (DPP). The platform supports both offline and online analysis of accelerator and beam data, helping physicists and engineers monitor and control particle accelerators.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain mission‑critical backend components for the DPP.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and perform technological watch to keep the platform up‑to‑date.
• Collaborate with product owners, end users and infrastructure teams to gather requirements and define solutions.
• Support accelerator experts, physicists and operations crews by improving platform usability and performance.
• Participate in the migration of legacy services to the modern DPP architecture.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or a related field.
• Proven experience in Java software development and hands‑on Python programming.
• Strong knowledge of the Spring Framework ecosystem.
• Practical experience with concurrent and multi‑threaded programming.
• Good understanding of distributed systems and JVM internals.
• Familiarity with software quality assurance practices, CI/CD pipelines and automated build/test/deployment workflows.
