C++ Software Engineer – Real‑time Timing Systems

About the role

We are looking for an experienced C++ Software Engineer to join the Timing team within the Controls Software & Services group at CERN. You will work on the design, development and deployment of real‑time software for the ISOLDE accelerator’s timing system, based on White Rabbit technology.

Key responsibilities

• Learn the White Rabbit timing system, hardware modules and the real‑time software framework.
• Contribute to the design of the new ISOLDE timing system.
• Develop and commission the timing system software.
• Design and implement software that controls White Rabbit hardware modules.
• Adapt existing real‑time software to the new timing system.

Required profile

• National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• Master’s degree with 2‑6 years of post‑graduation experience, or PhD with up to 3 years of experience.
• No previous CERN fellow or graduate contract.
• Fluent in spoken and written English, willingness to learn French.

Required skills

• Strong C++ development experience on Linux/Unix.
• Hands‑on experience with real‑time and low‑level software, including kernel modules.
• Knowledge of software quality assurance techniques and DevOps tools.
• Proficiency in testing, debugging, optimisation and monitoring of operational software.
• Solid understanding of object‑oriented programming principles.

• Monthly stipend of 6 372–7 004 CHF (tax‑free) depending on degree.
