Electronics Engineer - 5D Optical Data Storage

About the role

SPhotonix is developing 5D optical data storage systems and is expanding its R&D laboratory in Switzerland. It is looking for an electronics engineer to join its R&D team in a hands-on role: designing, building and repairing the analog and digital electronics behind femtosecond lasers and optical writing systems. The position suits people who want to help shape the future of material processing and data storage.

Key responsibilities

• Design, inspect, test and update electronic systems, components, equipment and software for the femtosecond material processing and optical device fabrication teams.
• Design digital circuits, prototype and program FPGAs, including functional verification, RTL simulation and timing analysis.
• Design analog and power circuits for deflectors, modulators and other lab electronics.
• Draw schematics and layout PCBs, from simple prototypes to multi-layer boards, then solder, build and debug prototype boards.
• Design digital systems for high-speed data transfer between devices.
• Observe existing processes and recommend improvements in the material processing and fabrication labs.
• Troubleshoot, maintain equipment, integrate new technologies and write specifications, instructions and reports.
• Evaluate failures and implement corrective actions on opto-electronic systems.
• Support the material processing and device fabrication teams with information, coaching and technical assistance.
• Contribute to defining technology development requirements and work plans for the product roadmaps.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
• At least 3 years of experience in FPGA design and programming, and in designing electronic hardware including PCB layout.
• Proficiency in a hardware description language (VHDL, Verilog) and scripting skills.
• Hands-on soldering of through-hole and basic SMD components.
• Problem-solving, troubleshooting, analytical, written and verbal communication skills.
