Instrumentation Engineer – Cryogenic Systems

About the role

You will join the Cryogenic Group working on the High‑Luminosity Large Hadron Collider project. The position focuses on the design, qualification, and maintenance of cryogenic instrumentation and related test facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Develop new cryogenic sensors (pressure, level, temperature, heater) for CERN accelerators, ensuring they meet harsh operating conditions.
• Maintain and upgrade existing LabVIEW‑based test benches and create new facilities for radiation‑tolerant electronics qualification and sensor calibration.
• Provide on‑site support, diagnostics, maintenance and repair of cryogenic instrumentation across accelerators, cryogenic plants and test sites.

Required profile

• Experience in testing, calibrating and validating instrumentation under cryogenic conditions.
• Background in applied physics, electromechanical or electronic engineering (Master’s with 2‑6 years or PhD with ≤3 years post‑graduation experience).
• Eligibility: national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and no prior CERN fellow/graduate contract.
• Fluent in English or French with willingness to learn the other language.

Required skills

• Cryogenic instrumentation design and qualification.
• LabVIEW (or similar) for test‑bench development.
• Python programming.
• Front‑end and back‑end electronics, real‑time data acquisition.
• Metrology, radiology, diagnostics and troubleshooting of complex measurement systems.
