Internship – International Law, Human Rights & Environmental Law

About the role

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is seeking a law student to support the Environment and Forests Division. The internship focuses on the Aarhus and Espoo Conventions and their related protocols, offering hands‑on experience in international environmental law.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in preparing, organising and servicing intergovernmental meetings under the Espoo Convention and its SEA Protocol, including the Bureau meeting in December 2026.
• Support the preparation and documentation of Compliance Committee meetings for the Aarhus Convention and the PRTR Protocol.
• Draft outreach materials, short articles and content for the conventions’ websites and social media channels.
• Update and maintain databases such as the Aarhus Clearinghouse for Environmental Democracy and PRTR.net.
• Conduct desk research, draft reports, process data and provide general administrative support to secretariat officers.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate programme in law, preferably with a focus on international, human‑rights or environmental law.
• Strong interest in UN processes, environmental governance and public participation mechanisms.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
