Junior C++/Python Software Engineer – Weather API

About the role

Meteomatics is seeking a motivated Junior Software Engineer to join its API team in St. Gallen. You will help develop high‑performance services and algorithms that process petabytes of weather data, delivering real‑time insights to customers worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Design and optimise C++ algorithms for forecasting and processing weather data to support millions of API queries daily.
• Develop robust Python services and scripts for data acquisition and processing.
• Manage storage, processing, and distribution of large datasets such as radar, satellite imagery, station observations, and model forecasts.
• Monitor the Meteomatics Weather API in production and ensure 24/7 reliability.
• Improve monitoring, automation, and self‑healing of thousands of services.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to deliver fast product‑to‑market solutions, including industry‑specific use cases (e.g., renewable energy, aviation).
• Scale software to handle more data sources, higher query volumes, and finer spatial‑temporal resolution.

Required profile

• Degree in Computer Science, Computational Science, IT, Systems Engineering or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 1–2 years of software development experience (including internships or projects) with solid C++ fundamentals.
• Interest or background in atmospheric physics or meteorology.
• Motivation to work in an interdisciplinary team and tackle challenging weather‑data problems.
• Fluent English; German or Swiss German is a plus.
• Swiss/EU citizenship or valid work permit.
