Junior R&D Engineer

About the role

We are developing a new generation of endoscopes that make minimally invasive procedures safer, faster and more precise. As a fast‑growing EPFL spin‑off, we need a Junior R&D Engineer to help design, prototype and test the core medical endoscopy system. You will work closely with the CTO and the hardware and software teams to deliver high‑performance, single‑use endoscope subsystems.

Key responsibilities

• Design, prototype and iterate single‑use endoscope subsystems such as the distal tip, steering mechanism, shaft and working channel.
• Integrate camera and LED modules, optimise image quality and illumination at the distal tip.
• Design and characterise irrigation and suction performance, including flow calculations and bench testing.
• Build test rigs and conduct mechanical and functional verification tests (deflection, torque, stiffness, fatigue, flow, leak).
• Collaborate with contract manufacturers and component suppliers on part design, sourcing and assembly processes.
• Write design documentation, test protocols and reports for the design history file.

Required profile

• MSc in mechanical engineering, micro‑engineering, biomedical engineering or a related field.
• At least 1 year of hands‑on experience in medical device or precision mechanical product development.
• Strong mechanical design skills, including CAD, tolerancing and material selection, and rapid prototyping (3D printing, machining, small‑part assembly).
• Good understanding of mechanisms and kinematics, preferably tendon‑driven or flexible systems.
• Solid grounding in fluid mechanics (laminar flow, pressure drop, pump and suction sizing) with experience running flow bench tests.
• Fluent English (C1 level).
