Legal Internship with Basel, Rotterdam & Stockholm Conventions

About the role

This internship offers a unique opportunity to support the secretariats of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, three key multilateral environmental agreements. Working under a Legal Officer in UNEP's Governance Branch, you will contribute to the 2026‑2027 work programme while gaining practical experience in international environmental law.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Governance Branch in implementing the 2026‑2027 work programme of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions.
• Collect information, conduct legal research and analysis on hazardous chemicals and waste regulations.
• Draft letters, legal documents, presentations and training materials.
• Support preparation, follow‑up and reporting for meetings of governing bodies, compliance committees and the 2027 Conferences of the Parties.
• Contribute to cooperation with other international bodies, trade‑environment legal matters and enforcement issues.
• Assist in legal technical assistance, capacity‑building activities and the communication of legal information.
• Help prepare publications, outreach materials and national legal framework analyses.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or recently completed a postgraduate programme (master’s degree or equivalent) in international law, environmental law, political science, international relations or development studies.
• Strong interest in multilateral environmental agreements and hazardous chemical/waste management.
• Ability to work under the supervision of a Legal Officer and collaborate with international teams.

Required skills

• Legal research and analysis.
• Drafting of legal documents and correspondence.
• Excellent written and oral communication in English.
