Legal & Policy Internship – Basel, Rotterdam & Stockholm Conventions

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a motivated intern to support the Secretariats of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. Working under the direct supervision of a Programme Officer in the Governance Branch, the intern will contribute to the implementation of the 2026‑2027 work programme.

Key responsibilities

• Collect information, conduct legal research and analysis related to hazardous chemicals and waste.
• Draft letters, legal documents, presentations and training materials.
• Assist in preparation, follow‑up and reporting for meetings of governing bodies, compliance committees and Parties conferences.
• Support coordination with other international bodies on trade‑environment legal matters.
• Contribute to legal technical assistance, capacity‑building activities and the communication of legal information.
• Help prepare publications, outreach materials and national legal framework analyses.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or recently completed a postgraduate programme (master’s degree or higher).
• Academic background in international law, international environmental law, political science, international relations or development studies is preferred.
• Strong interest in environmental governance and multilateral agreements.
