Mechanical Technician – Beam Intercepting Devices

About the role

CERN is looking for a Mechanical Technician to join the SY‑STI‑BDE Section, which designs, builds, operates and maintains beam‑intercepting devices for the accelerator complex. You will work on precision mechanical equipment in harsh, radiation‑filled environments, supporting safety‑critical systems and the efficient operation of the accelerators.

Key responsibilities

• Purchase, store and ship raw materials and components.
• Condition components to meet Ultra‑High Vacuum (UHV) requirements for collimators.
• Machine simple parts from CAD drawings.
• Assemble collimators, sub‑components and auxiliary systems, including HL‑LHC beam dump systems.
• Maintain documentation and databases related to the equipment.
• Install, commission and maintain beam‑intercepting devices.
• Dispose of or store radioactive parts safely.
• Provide mechanical and logistics support across CERN facilities.

Required profile

• Maximum two years of professional experience after graduation in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• No previous CERN fellow or graduate contract.
• Fluent in English or French, with willingness to learn the other language.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD systems (3D and 2D drawing).
• Basic machining of parts from technical drawings.
• Experience with Ultra‑High Vacuum (UHV) conditioning.
• Mechanical assembly of collimators and beam‑dump systems.
• Handling of radioactive components and work in radiation areas.
• Use of lifting equipment (bridge cranes, aerial work platforms) and a valid driving licence.
