Medical Specialist – Blast Trauma Care

About the role

The International Committee of the Red Cross is seeking experienced medical doctors to join its roster for field‑based assignments supporting explosive ordnance clearance operations. The Medical Specialist will combine clinical expertise, operational insight, and teaching ability to enhance capacity for managing blast‑related trauma.

Key responsibilities

• Review and strengthen medical procedures for mine‑action operations, including casualty management and evacuation chains.
• Deliver tailored Blast Trauma Care (BTC) training to field personnel.
• Design and implement a Training‑of‑Trainers (ToT) programme to create a sustainable pool of local instructors.
• Provide practical, context‑adapted medical advice to improve preparedness and response.
• Offer operational support to ICRC staff and, when required, deliver CBRN‑focused trauma training.

Required profile

• Medical doctor with specialization in anaesthesia, intensive care, emergency medicine, pre‑hospital care or a related clinical field.
• Minimum 8 years of clinical experience, including trauma management.
• Experience treating blast injuries or providing medical support for mine‑clearance operations; CBRN experience is an asset.
• Proven experience working in low‑resource or humanitarian settings.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver practical and simulation‑based medical training.
• Capacity to work independently in field environments and adapt to changing operational contexts.
• Availability for deployments of 3 months up to 12 months.
