Particle Accelerator Operator – CERN

About the role

Join the Operations Group at CERN and become part of the 24/7 shift team that runs the world’s most powerful accelerator complex. You will be responsible for delivering high‑quality particle beams to a variety of physics experiments.

Key responsibilities

• Operate proton and ion accelerators (e.g., Linac3, Linac4, PSB, LEIR, PS) on a shift basis.
• Collaborate with accelerator physicists to set up, optimise and document operational scenarios.
• Develop and maintain applications and advanced tools to improve accelerator performance.
• Support the technical infrastructure team during non‑operational periods.

Required profile

• Higher Technical or Administrative Diploma (or equivalent) in a relevant field.
• Initial work experience in a technical or scientific environment.
• Background in physics, engineering or computing.
• Basic knowledge of software engineering in a modern programming language.
• Familiarity with automation concepts and a drive for operational efficiency.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

Required skills

• Operation of particle accelerators.
• Software engineering (modern programming language).
• Automation concepts and techniques.
• Measurement devices, power‑converter techniques, vacuum equipment, PLCs.
• Experience with large‑facility hardware (asset).
