PhD Position: Combining Remote and In-Situ Life Detection Techniques
CAS in Medication Safety University of Bern · Berne
Description du poste
About the role
The Centre for Space and Habitability and the Division for Space Research and Planetary Sciences at the University of Bern invite applications for a PhD position within the new NCCR Genesis, a research infrastructure funded by the SNSF that explores the emergence of life in the Universe. The project investigates, for the first time, the combination of remote life sensing with circular spectro-polarimetry and in situ laser-based mass spectrometry, both aimed at detecting biosignatures.
The work mainly involves laboratory experiments with cell cultures of various strains (including anaerobic cultivation) and organic molecules relevant to Solar System environments, complemented by field measurements of soil material containing microorganisms and low-abundance organics. The candidate joins an interdisciplinary team and gains experience in dual-use instrumentation for space exploration and medical diagnostics. The start date is 1 February 2027.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out laboratory experiments with cell cultures and organic molecules relevant to Solar System environments
- Perform targeted field measurements of soil material containing microorganisms and low-abundance organics
- Combine remote and in situ life detection methods to help define strategies for future missions such as the ESA L4 mission to Enceladus and future NASA missions to Mars
Required profile
- MSc degree in physics, chemistry or biology
- Willingness to learn microbiological techniques; prior wet lab experience is an asset
- No prior expertise in optics required; training is provided
- Excellent oral and written English
Required skills
- A basic understanding of polarization, vacuum technology and/or mass spectrometry is a plus
