About the role

The Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences at ETH Zurich and the PSI Center for Neutron and Muon Sciences invite applications for a joint professorship in Solid‑State Materials. The professor will lead the Laboratory for Multiscale Materials eXperiments (LMX) at PSI, benefitting from world‑class neutron, muon, X‑ray and free‑electron laser facilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and lead an internationally competitive research programme in solid‑state inorganic materials.
  • Oversee the operation and exploitation of the new material synthesis facilities within the Quantum Materials and Materials Discovery Center.
  • Mentor and support existing research groups in LMX and foster collaborations with ETH Zurich.
  • Drive materials discovery, synthesis, and advanced structural characterisation for quantum technologies, neuromorphic computing, energy harvesting and optoelectronics.
  • Promote synergies with PSI large‑scale facilities (SINQ, SµS, SLS, SwissFEL) and the European Spallation Source.

Required profile

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, physics or a related discipline.
  • Strong international research record in solid‑state materials, quantum materials or 2D materials.
  • Proven leadership of a large research group or unit.
  • Commitment to high‑quality student education and mentorship.

Required skills

  • Solid‑state synthesis, flux growth, chemical vapor deposition, thin‑film growth.
  • X‑ray scattering (total and diffuse), advanced solid‑state NMR.
  • Neutron spin rotation and muon spin rotation spectroscopy.
  • Electronic and spin spectroscopy techniques.
