About the role

The Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences at ETH Zurich and the PSI Center for Neutron and Muon Sciences invite applications for a joint professorship in Solid‑State Materials. The appointed professor will lead the Laboratory for Multiscale Materials Experiments (LMX) at PSI, benefitting from world‑class neutron, muon, X‑ray and free‑electron laser facilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and lead a world‑class research programme on solid‑state inorganic materials, including 2D materials, quantum and electronic materials.
  • Oversee the operation and exploitation of the new material synthesis facilities within the Quantum Materials and Materials Discovery Center.
  • Supervise and mentor existing research groups in LMX and build new teams.
  • Collaborate closely with PSI’s large‑scale experimental infrastructures (SINQ, SµS, SLS, SwissFEL) and external partners such as the European Spallation Source.
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses and supervise PhD and post‑doctoral researchers.

Required profile

  • Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, physics or a closely related discipline.
  • Outstanding international research record in solid‑state materials, materials discovery, or related fields.
  • Proven leadership of a research group or laboratory.
  • Strong commitment to high‑quality education and mentorship.

Required skills

  • X‑ray scattering and diffraction techniques
  • Advanced solid‑state NMR spectroscopy
  • Neutron spin rotation and muon spin rotation spectroscopy
  • Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and thin‑film growth methods
  • Flux and solid‑state synthesis of single‑crystalline materials
  • Materials characterization using scattering, spectroscopy and microscopy
