Senior Historian and Strategic Expert on Syria

About the role

The Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic (IIMP) seeks a senior‑level historian and strategic expert to deepen its understanding of Syria’s complex historical, political and social landscape. This remote consultancy will support the Executive Office in shaping communication and engagement strategies that are historically informed and culturally sensitive.

Key responsibilities

• Assess the current political, economic, social and cultural environment in Syria, identifying key challenges and opportunities for IIMP.
• Provide detailed analysis of historical developments, especially concerning civil society, democratic movements and media.
• Offer expert advice to inform strategic discussions, planning and decision‑making.
• Advise on cultural, political and historical sensitivities affecting stakeholder engagement.
• Interpret current events through a historically informed lens to support communication and outreach.
• Respond to ad‑hoc requests for clarification, analysis or interpretation.
• Review strategic documents, reports and communication materials for historical and political accuracy.
• Collaborate with other experts and stakeholders as needed.

Required profile

• Extensive experience as a historian or academic researcher specializing in modern Syrian history.
• Deep knowledge of Syrian civil society, democratic movements and media dynamics.
• Proven ability to provide senior‑level strategic advice in an international or humanitarian context.
• Strong analytical skills and capacity to translate historical insights into practical recommendations.
