Senior Software Engineer – Desktop Applications

About the role

As a Senior Software Engineer in the Inbox Desktop team, you will own the development of the Proton Mail Desktop application for Windows and Linux. You will work closely with product, design and other engineering teams to deliver a secure, high‑quality user experience.

Key responsibilities

• Research and assess new technologies to guide cross‑team technical decisions.
• Translate product specifications into technical requirements and lead implementation.
• Develop, deploy and maintain new and existing features ensuring excellent user experience.
• Improve development lifecycle, tools and processes to enhance scalability and developer productivity.
• Write clear, concise and testable code for the desktop client.
• Plan, scope and execute feature work, technical initiatives and green‑field projects.
• Mentor team members, promote quality assurance and performance optimisation.

Required profile

• Significant professional experience with Rust or strong modern C++ background and Rust side projects.
• Proven experience building high‑performance cross‑platform desktop applications for Windows and Linux.
• Product mindset focused on delivering outstanding user experiences and understanding key performance metrics.
• Ability to make architectural decisions, contribute to strategic planning and write effective engineering documentation.
• Excellent collaboration and written communication skills in a distributed team.
• Strong problem‑solving abilities, including remote troubleshooting while preserving user privacy.
