Software Developer – Cellosaurus Platform

About the role

The Software Developer will join the IT team at the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and become the primary technical lead for Cellosaurus, an internationally used cell line knowledge resource. The role involves designing, building, and maintaining back‑end services, web applications and data management tools while ensuring high data quality, semantic interoperability and long‑term maintainability.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as the technical reference point for Cellosaurus, coordinating with the team lead, curators and the wider IT team.
• Develop and maintain the website, REST APIs, semantic web services and other online tools.
• Create data management and validation tools.
• Stay up‑to‑date with modern web development tools and methods.
• Ensure tool maintenance and provide end‑user support as needed.
• Write or contribute to user and software documentation.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of professional software development experience.
• Strong teamwork, collaboration and problem‑solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently, take initiative and pay attention to detail.
• Fluent in English and French with good written and verbal communication skills.

Required skills

• Python (FastAPI, Django, Flask)
• Relational databases: MySQL / MariaDB and SQL
• Git version control
• Linux environment with Nginx or Apache web servers
• SPARQL, RDF, OWL and other semantic web technologies (preferred)
• PHP stack: Laravel, Drupal
• Front‑end tooling: JavaScript, CSS (Tailwind CSS), npm, Vite.js
• Docker, containerised deployment and CI/CD pipelines
• AI‑assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot)
• JVM languages: Java, Scala
• Full‑text search engines: Solr or Meilisearch
