Software Engineer – ATM Surveillance Data Processing

About the role

Fortil is seeking a Software Engineer to join a multidisciplinary team focused on modernising critical ATM surveillance data processing systems in the canton of Vaud. You will work on transforming a large legacy platform into a service‑oriented architecture while maintaining the highest standards of reliability, safety and performance.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in the service decomposition and modernisation of complex legacy systems.
• Design, develop and maintain high‑availability backend applications using Java and the Spring Framework.
• Apply TDD and BDD methodologies, creating automated test suites with Java and Cucumber.
• Produce and maintain software requirements, design documentation, and ensure traceability across artefacts.
• Support integration, deployment preparation, verification, validation, FAT and SAT activities.
• Investigate defects, perform root‑cause analysis and contribute to certification and compliance processes.

Required profile

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT, Aeronautics or related field.
• At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, preferably in regulated, safety‑critical environments.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and communication skills.
• Swiss or EU‑27 citizenship and professional proficiency in English.

Required skills

• Java development (strong expertise).
• Spring Framework, Maven.
• Linux environment and networking concepts.
• Test‑Driven Development (TDD) and Behavior‑Driven Development (BDD).
• Cucumber for automated testing.
• Distributed systems architecture.
• Netty, messaging systems, low‑level network communications (nice to have).
