Software Engineer – Data Management (Rucio)

About the role

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join the ATLAS Experiment team at CERN, working on Rucio – an open‑source scientific data‑management system used by major collaborations worldwide. You will help evolve the platform to meet the High‑Luminosity LHC data challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Evolve Rucio’s transfer and policy engines for HL‑LHC scale.
• Improve usability, scalability and performance for the ATLAS experiment.
• Participate in DevOps and operational activities for the ATLAS Rucio production deployment.
• Maintain core components of Rucio.
• Contribute to the broader scientific data‑management community.

Required profile

• Proven experience in software engineering for distributed, large‑scale or data‑intensive systems.
• Track record of developing and maintaining production‑grade software.
• Experience designing and implementing distributed services, APIs or data‑management systems at scale.
• Practical knowledge of DevOps practices, automated testing and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience operating production services in Linux environments.
• Familiarity with scientific computing environments is an advantage.
