Storage Engineer (Systems Engineering) - HPC

About the role

The Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS), operated by ETH Zurich, develops and runs high-performance computing (HPC) systems as a service for science. It is seeking a Storage Engineer (Systems Engineering) for a two-year fixed-term contract in Lugano, with the possibility of extension. The project is funded to give scientists access to large-scale climate and earth observation data, in collaboration with partners such as ETHZ Geolab, C2SM, ECMWF, NASA and NOAA.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and operate HPC storage services in a multi-tenant infrastructure.
• Contribute to the design, implementation, maintenance and documentation of storage services for HPC.
• Help develop and enhance HPC systems so that they are more functional and efficient.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• Sound knowledge of Linux administration, filesystems, storage redundancy, backup solutions and object storage concepts.

Required skills

• Linux administration and generic filesystem aspects (data, metadata, block size).
• Storage redundancy technologies (RAID, D-RAID, EC) and backup solutions (DMF, TSM, Veeam).
• Object storage concepts and S3 usage/implementation.
• Automation tools and frameworks, including CI/CD (GitLab CI, HashiCorp Vault).
• Preferred: parallel file systems (GPFS, Lustre), Ceph clusters, ArgoCD, server automation (OpenCHAMI, MAAS, Foreman), Ansible and Kubernetes services.
