ATLAS Detector Installation Technician (Junior Mechanical)

About the role
The EP-ATL-PO section at CERN is responsible for the upgrade and maintenance of the ATLAS detector during Long Shutdown 3. As a Junior Mechanical Technician you will support experienced engineers in the installation, integration and movement of detector components, gaining hands‑on experience in a world‑leading experimental physics environment.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in large‑scale ATLAS detector movements and the installation of access platforms within the experimental cavern.
- Support sub‑detector installation activities, including handling, transport and precise positioning using lifting and alignment techniques.
- Prepare work areas, set up tooling and provide logistical support for detector interventions.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, perform basic dimensional checks and report progress to supervising engineers.
- Manufacture parts and tooling using conventional machining methods such as drilling, milling and turning when required.
Required profile
- Maximum two years of professional experience in mechanical engineering or a related field since graduation.
- National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
- Possession of a valid driving licence.
- Willingness to work in radiation areas, underground installations and to perform night, weekend or holiday shifts as needed.
Required skills
- Interpretation of mechanical drawings, blueprints and 2D/3D CAD models.
- Basic machining techniques (drilling, milling, turning) and workshop practices.
- Metrology using calipers, gauges and dimensional inspection tools.
- Use of standard hand and power tools for mechanical operations.
- Awareness of occupational health and safety procedures.
- Documentation of work performed and adherence to technical specifications.
