Cleanroom Fabrication Engineer - Quantum Devices
Quantum Device Lab, ETH Zurich · Zurich
Job description
About the role
The Quantum Device Lab at ETH Zurich, led by Prof. Andreas Wallraff, fabricates quantum devices with micro- and nanofabrication techniques for research in quantum information science and technology, including large-scale error-corrected quantum computers. It operates across several cleanrooms in the Zurich area. The lab is looking for a Cleanroom Fabrication Engineer to help develop quantum processor chips with tens to hundreds of qubits, focusing on scaling micro-fabricated chips, including Through-Silicon-Vias (TSVs).
Key responsibilities
- Execute and refine micro- and nano-fabrication runs using existing fabrication processes.
- Develop and optimize novel fabrication processes for scalable architectures, such as high-aspect-ratio TSVs, deep reactive-ion etching and conformal coating.
- Run systematic metrology inspections to continuously improve fabrication yield.
- Collaborate with other fabrication engineers and measurement researchers to check how processes affect qubit coherence metrics and to deliver high-quality devices.
- Prepare technical and scientific documentation, track run logs and process metrics, and share them with scientists who characterize and operate the devices.
Required profile
- Experience in an academic and/or industrial setting in cleanroom fabrication, process control, specialized equipment or research.
- Master's degree or equivalent in micro- and nanofabrication, material science, physics, electrical engineering or a related field; a PhD is helpful but not required.
- Excellent English; German is a plus.
- Ability to communicate findings in a multidisciplinary team, with attention to detail and structured work habits.
Required skills
- Cleanroom experience with semi- or superconductor processing: electron beam lithography, photolithography, dry and wet etching, thin film deposition.
- Surface characterization, metrology (optical, scanning electron, atomic force microscopy), statistical process control, yield improvement, failure analysis.
- Knowledge of vacuum technology, leak detection or cryogenic systems.
What we offer
- In-depth exposure to quantum technology and a wide range of fabrication challenges.
- A collaborative, interdisciplinary R&D environment with a flat hierarchy and open culture.
- Access to cleanroom facilities at ETH Hönggerberg, IBM Rüschlikon and PSI Villigen.
Applications are submitted online through the ETH Zurich application portal, with a CV, a statement of research interests, transcripts and certificates, and three reference contacts.
