Communications Specialist, Humanitarian Response Division (HRD)

About the role

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is seeking a Communications Specialist to join the Humanitarian Response Division (HRD) in Geneva. Reporting to the Head of the External Relations Unit and under the overall supervision of the Emergency Director, you will help standardise humanitarian communication, raise the visibility of UNFPA’s emergency activities and produce compelling media content in crisis settings.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement communication strategies that align with UNFPA’s humanitarian mandate.
• Coordinate the production of press releases, fact sheets, videos and social media content for emergency operations.
• Support the standardisation of messaging across UNFPA’s humanitarian programmes and partner networks.
• Enhance media outreach and manage relationships with journalists covering humanitarian issues.
• Provide technical guidance to field teams on communication best‑practice and content creation.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a related field.
• Minimum of five years professional experience in humanitarian or development communication.
• Demonstrated ability to work in multicultural, high‑pressure environments.
• Fluency in English; knowledge of additional UN languages is an asset.

• Knowledge of humanitarian coordination mechanisms (e.g., IASC, Grand Bargain).
