Doctoral Position in Environmental Microbiology

About the role

The Environmental Microbiology group at the Department of Environmental Systems Science, ETH Zurich, invites applications for a fully funded 4-year doctoral position in Zurich. The project investigates the physiology and bioenergetics of alkaliphilic methanogenic archaea, within the framework of the NCCR Genesis, a research infrastructure funded by the SNSF that studies the emergence of life in the Universe.

Key responsibilities

• Investigate what limits the growth of alkaliphilic methanogens and how they conserve energy and acquire carbon at high pH
• Determine which signatures distinguish their methane from abiotic methane
• Combine anaerobic cultivation, physiology and biochemistry

Required profile

• MSc (or equivalent) in microbiology, environmental sciences or a related field
• Curiosity about fundamental questions and enthusiasm for experimental work
• Excellent communication skills in English

Required skills

• Experience in anaerobic cultivation and/or protein biochemistry is an advantage
