Hardware Engineer (f/m/d)

About the role

Exoscale, a Swiss/European cloud service provider, is hiring a Hardware Engineer in Lausanne. The engineer designs, deploys and maintains the physical infrastructure powering the cloud services, working at the intersection of hardware and software so that data centers run efficiently, reliably and performantly. The role covers specifying, designing and qualifying hardware for cloud data centers, including standards and hardware lifecycle management.

Key responsibilities

• Design and specify hypervisor and storage chassis and servers, as well as hardware configurations.
• Evaluate and qualify new hardware technologies and vendors for deployment at scale.
• Develop hardware standards and best practices.
• Plan and execute hardware refresh cycles and take part in capacity expansions.
• Analyze hardware utilization and performance data to optimize configurations.
• Monitor performance, reliability metrics and failure rates across the fleet.
• Troubleshoot complex hardware issues in production and coordinate with vendors, providers and manufacturers.
• Drive cost optimization through hardware lifecycle management.
• Collaborate with site reliability and software engineers on hardware-software integration.
• Research emerging technologies and technology trends.

Required profile

• Strong understanding of x86/ARM server architectures, memory hierarchies and I/O systems.
• Experience in large-scale data center environments.
• Experience with hardware automation and monitoring tools.
• Experience with Linux/Unix and hardware management tools such as IPMI and BMC.
• Understanding of power and cooling systems, including liquid cooling.
• Good English, written and spoken.
• Curious, autonomous, able to work in a distributed team; candidates willing to learn are encouraged to apply.
