Intern for Automation Cutting Tools (R&D)

About the role

Join Oerlik's R&D team as an intern focused on automating machining tests and developing intelligent wear‑analysis solutions. You will work on cutting‑edge projects that combine machine tools, automation, image processing and artificial intelligence, gaining hands‑on experience in a multidisciplinary environment.

Key responsibilities

• Improve, design, implement and test hardware and software systems for automated cutting tests.
• Enhance system connectivity, reliability and functionality to broaden application scope.
• Develop wear‑detection algorithms for automated evaluation of microscope images.
• Integrate image‑analysis solutions with existing hardware and software platforms.
• Support the design and execution of machining tests targeting specific wear mechanisms.
• Analyze experimental data and contribute to continuous improvement of R&D processes.

Required profile

• Current enrollment in Mechanical, Automation or Production Engineering studies.
• Strong interest in experimental mechanics, machine tools, automation and artificial intelligence.
• Analytical mindset with strong problem‑solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and take initiative.
• Good communication skills and willingness to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams.
• Very good English; German is a plus.
