Job description

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is hosting an unpaid, full-time internship in Geneva, Switzerland, within its Risk Management and Peacebuilding Section of the Disasters and Conflicts Branch. The intern reports to the Project Coordinator and, secondarily, to the Manager of the EU-UNEP Climate Change and Security Partnership Programme. The internship lasts about six months and focuses on supporting project activities, research, analysis, communications and operational support.

Key responsibilities

  • Operational and programmatic support: help implement projects, support narrative reporting to donors and partners, organize in-person and online events, and assist with concept notes and project proposals.
  • Research and analysis: collect, analyse and present data from diverse sources, including geospatial datasets, and prepare technical reports, scoping studies and baseline climate-security risk assessments.
  • Communications support: contribute to advocacy and outreach materials, manage the Partnership's Knowledge Hub, and draft social media posts and other visibility materials.
  • Support writing of research papers, funding proposals, analytical and donor reports, scoping reports and technical products, and collaborate with colleagues to refine and edit drafts.
  • Assist in planning and running missions, meetings and conferences, including briefing notes, invitations, presentations, post-meeting summaries and follow-up documentation.
  • Update the Knowledge Hub with articles and updates on project activities, achievements, results, lessons learned and good practices, and share project outputs through communication channels.
  • Perform other tasks requested by the Programme Coordinator or Manager, as priorities evolve during the internship.

Required profile

  • Currently enrolled in, or within one year of completing, a master's degree in environmental sciences, policy, climate change studies, communications, public policy, geography or a related field; final-year undergraduates with relevant experience may be considered.
  • Passion for addressing environmental and climate-related risks to peace and security.
  • Fluency in English; knowledge of French, Spanish or Russian is an advantage.

Required skills

  • Proven research and data analysis skills, including experience with geospatial datasets and tools.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, with experience preparing professional reports and research papers.
  • Ability to develop outreach materials and presentations for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in digital tools, websites, online collaboration platforms and content management systems.
  • Knowledge of data visualization tools for analytical visuals.
