Job description
About the role
Thomson Reuters is looking for a Lead Software Engineer for the CoCounsel Legal Desktop App, a new desktop engineering team. As the founding engineer, you will define the architecture, set engineering standards and ship production code that makes an AI-powered product feel native on Windows and Mac. You will work closely with the Engineering Manager and Product, and mentor the engineers who join you.
Key responsibilities
- Set the technical foundation of the desktop app, including early architecture decisions on framework choice (e.g. Electron, Tauri, native), project structure, IPC patterns, packaging and auto-update infrastructure.
- Write production-quality desktop code for core features such as the main agent experience, local file integrations, OS-level notifications, clipboard handling and system tray presence.
- Integrate with the CoCounsel backend, working with Agent Core and AI Platform teams on agent APIs, streaming responses, file and workspace infrastructure and authentication flows.
- Define and uphold engineering standards: code review practices, unit, integration and end-to-end testing, cross-platform compatibility and performance benchmarks.
- Mentor desktop engineers through code review, pairing and technical guidance.
- Partner with Product and Design, and share desktop patterns with the wider application experience community.
Required profile
- 7+ years of software engineering experience, with significant depth in desktop development for Windows and/or macOS.
- Proven experience leading technical direction on a desktop product, not just executing it.
- Track record shipping high-quality production desktop apps in a professional or enterprise context.
- Ability to mentor engineers and communicate technical trade-offs clearly.
Required skills
- Hands-on experience with a desktop framework such as Electron, Tauri, native Win32/macOS APIs or equivalent.
- Experience integrating desktop apps with cloud APIs, including streaming, OAuth/SSO authentication and local file system access.
- Preferred: greenfield desktop experience, legal tech or productivity software background, AI-powered desktop features, and enterprise deployment patterns (MSI/PKG, MDM).
What we offer
- Flexible hybrid work model.
- Flex My Way policies, including work from anywhere for up to 8 weeks per year.
- Career growth through Grow My Way programming.
- Benefits including flexible vacation, two company-wide Mental Health Days, Headspace access, retirement savings, tuition reimbursement and incentive programs.
- Inclusive culture and two paid volunteer days off annually.
