Machine Learning Engineer, AI Enablement

About the role

Roche's Computational Sciences Center of Excellence (CoE) is building the infrastructure that turns AI into a reliable utility for its researchers. Within the CoE, the AI Enablement Engineering group builds scalable systems, data pipelines and intelligent applications that help scientists work smarter. As a Machine Learning Engineer in AI Enablement, you will design the infrastructure that makes AI an everyday tool for researchers, partnering with computational scientists, ML experts, product leaders and DevOps engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Translate scientific and business needs into technical designs and implement agentic AI solutions
• Write, test and ship high-quality, maintainable production code and build scalable systems and data pipelines
• Own end-to-end features, from model evaluation to production deployment
• Contribute to architectural decisions, code reviews and the evolution of development processes
• Apply software engineering best practices (testing, CI/CD, documentation) alongside AI tooling and quantitative metrics to evaluate and scale ML systems
• Span the stack and stay up to date with emerging technologies and best practices

Required profile

• Master's degree with 2+ years of professional experience, or a PhD in Computer Science or a similar technical field
• Comfortable working across the ML lifecycle, from GPU optimization and model performance to backend systems and cloud-native architecture (e.g., Kubernetes, AWS)
• Solid knowledge of statistics and ML theory, and of AI/ML frameworks, libraries and toolsets
• Excellent communicator able to explain technical trade-offs to scientists, engineers and other stakeholders
• Willingness to mentor others and learn continuously

Preferred but not required: experience with biological data (ideally multimodal), experience working with scientists or in a research environment, and experience with workflow automation, GenAI and/or agents. The role requires being onsite about 3 days a week and does not offer relocation assistance.
