Mechanical Engineer – ALICE Detector Upgrade (CERN)

About the role
CERN is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support the ALICE Technical Coordination team during the upcoming LHC Long Shutdown periods (LS3 and LS4). You will work on the installation of new detector components and the design of the next‑generation ALICE 3 detector, collaborating with a multidisciplinary group of engineers, technicians, and scientists.
Key responsibilities
- Participate in LS3 installation activities, including the new beam pipe, silicon tracker and forward calorimeter.
- Provide on‑site mechanical engineering supervision during scheduled maintenance periods.
- Define experiment layout for the ALICE 3 upgrade, integrating detectors, services and infrastructure.
- Design metallic and carbon‑composite structures and perform structural analyses for mechanical, thermal and dynamic loads.
- Coordinate with detector experts, external companies, and CERN technical support teams.
- Supervise designers and technicians in daily tasks.
Required profile
- Master’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Proven experience in design, construction and assembly of mechanical systems.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and supervising technical staff.
- Ability to coordinate work with external contractors.
Required skills
- Proficiency with CATIA for CAD design.
- Knowledge of ANSYS for structural analysis.
- Design and analysis of mechanical structures.
- Numerical modelling in solid mechanics.
- Experience with non‑metallic composites.
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models.
