Mechanical Engineer – ALICE Detector Upgrade

About the role
The ALICE Technical Coordination team at CERN is expanding to meet the increased mechanical‑engineering workload linked to the LHC Long Shutdown periods (LS3 2026‑2028 and LS4 2033‑2034). As a Mechanical Engineer you will support the installation of new detector components and contribute to the design and construction of the next‑generation ALICE 3 detector.
Key responsibilities
- Participate in LS3 installation activities, including the new beam pipe, silicon tracker and forward calorimeter.
- Provide on‑site mechanical engineering supervision during scheduled maintenance periods.
- Support the ALICE 3 upgrade programme for LS4, defining experiment layout and integrating detectors, services and infrastructure.
- Design metallic and carbon‑composite structures, perform structural analyses for mechanical, thermal and dynamic loads, and ensure compliance with safety requirements.
- Collaborate with detector experts, external companies, and technical support teams from CERN and partner institutes.
- Supervise designers and technicians in daily tasks.
Required profile
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Proven experience in design, construction and assembly of mechanical systems.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and coordinating external contractors.
Required skills
- Proficiency with CATIA for CAD design.
- Knowledge of ANSYS for structural analysis.
- Design and analysis of mechanical structures, including metallic and composite materials.
- Numerical modelling in solid mechanics.
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models.
