Mechanical Engineer for LHCb Calorimeter Upgrade

About the role

As a Mechanical Engineer you will contribute to the upgrade of the LHCb electromagnetic calorimeter (ECAL). The role involves designing new ECAL modules, supporting their production, and assisting with the re‑assembly of the ECAL structure.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare 3D models and detailed drawings of mechanical parts and assemblies.
• Participate in procurement, quality assurance and integration of new ECAL modules.
• Conduct finite element studies and structural simulations for the ECAL re‑assembly.
• Support R&D activities aimed at improving existing ECAL modules.

Required profile

• Maximum two years of professional experience in Mechanical Engineering after graduation.
• Degree at Bachelor’s or Master’s level in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Eligibility as a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• Never previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Required skills

• Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (e.g., CATIA).
• Experience in finite element analysis and structural simulations (e.g., Ansys Mechanical).
• Knowledge of additive manufacturing with metals.
• Familiarity with heavy absorber materials such as lead or tungsten is an advantage.
