Mechanical Technician – Beam Intercept Devices

About the role

The SY‑STI‑BDE Section at CERN is looking for a Mechanical Technician to join a multidisciplinary team that designs, assembles, installs and maintains beam‑intercepting devices across the accelerator complex. You will work on safety‑critical systems that operate in harsh, radiation‑filled environments.

Key responsibilities

• Purchase, store and ship raw materials and components.
• Condition components to meet Ultra‑High Vacuum (UHV) specifications.
• Machine simple parts from CAD drawings.
• Assemble collimators, sub‑components and auxiliary systems, including HL‑LHC beam dump systems.
• Maintain documentation and databases.
• Install, commission and maintain equipment on‑site.
• Manage disposal or storage of radioactive parts.
• Provide mechanical and logistics support to various CERN facilities.

Required profile

• Maximum two years of professional experience in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Good communication skills in English or French, with willingness to learn the other language.
• Eligibility: no prior CERN fellow or graduate contract; highest qualification must be a secondary education diploma.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD systems (3D and 2D drawing).
• Basic machining skills.
• Knowledge of Ultra‑High Vacuum (UHV) handling procedures.
• Experience in mechanical assembly of precision equipment.
• Familiarity with lifting equipment and radiation‑area work.
