Mechanical Technician – CMS Detector Upgrades

About the role

The Mechanical Technician will support upgrade projects of the CMS detector at CERN, performing workshop‑based mechanical work, installing detector systems and designing tooling for sub‑detector removal and installation. The role also includes radioprotection duties in experimental areas and laboratories, and coordination within the CMS Technical Coordination team.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure safety and radioprotection for sub‑detector removal and installation, collaborating with CMS safety officers.
• Manage the mechanical workshop, providing equipment, tools and consumables to CMS sub‑detector teams.
• Provide hands‑on technical support in mechanical manufacturing, assembly, structures and welding within CERN laboratories.
• Develop, test, install and operate custom tooling for sub‑detectors together with technical teams.
• Operate and maintain hydraulic, mechanical and electromechanical systems.
• Organise and supervise storage of sub‑detector equipment, maintaining inventory and space management.
• Assist the territorial safety officer, supervise infrastructure work for general safety and operate mobile crane and forklift when required.
• Act as the technical contact for mechanical activities, reporting to Technical Coordination managers.

Required profile

• Higher technical diploma or equivalent experience in mechanics or manufacturing methods.
• Proven experience working in radioprotection‑classified areas.
• Demonstrated ability to manage a mechanical workshop and use standard machines and tools.
• Strong organisational skills for coordinating teamwork and on‑site technical activities.
• Ability to work closely with sub‑detector groups and technical support teams.
