Middle Office & P&L Controller – Finance

About the role
The Middle Office & P&L Controller will work at the intersection of Trading, Risk, Operations, Finance and external accounting partners. Based in Geneva, the role ensures accurate production, control and analysis of trading profit and loss, valuations and risk reporting for an international energy commodities trading firm.
Key responsibilities
- Calculate, validate and report daily and monthly trading P&L for physical and derivative energy transactions.
- Perform mark‑to‑market valuations, ensuring market price accuracy and correct inventory, position and exposure data.
- Analyse P&L movements, explaining drivers such as price, volume, basis, freight, FX, timing and valuation effects.
- Monitor hedging activities and reconcile physical positions with futures, swaps and other derivatives.
- Produce position, exposure, risk, P&L and management reports for Trading, Finance and senior management.
- Reconcile trading P&L with accounting results and investigate discrepancies across operational, trading and financial data.
- Review accruals, provisions, inventory valuations, invoices and related accounting entries.
- Coordinate with external accounting providers and support month‑end, quarter‑end and year‑end closing, including balance‑sheet reconciliations and audit preparation.
- Ensure data consistency between trading systems, SAP and the general ledger, and contribute to improving middle‑office controls and reporting tools.
Required profile
- Higher education in finance, accounting, audit, risk management or a related field.
- 5–8 years of experience in Middle Office, Product Control, P&L Control, Trading Finance, Accounting or Risk within a trading environment.
- Previous experience in energy or commodities trading is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of P&L calculation, mark‑to‑market valuation, physical trading, derivatives, hedging and risk exposures.
- Solid accounting knowledge including accruals, inventory valuation, balance‑sheet reconciliations and month‑end closing.
- Fluent English; French is a plus.
- Autonomous, rigorous and able to interact effectively with traders, operations, finance, auditors and external service providers.
