PhD Position: Vibrational and Optoelectronic Properties of Quasi-1D Chalcogenides
Empa · Dübendorf
Job description
About the role
The Nanomaterials Spectroscopy and Imaging Group within Empa's Transport at Nanoscale Interfaces Laboratory is looking for a PhD student to study quasi-1D (Ba,Sr)(Ti,Nb,Ta)(S,Se)3 chalcogenides, semiconductors with strong optical anisotropy and collective phenomena such as charge-density-wave order. The project investigates how composition, defects and chain alignment affect vibrational, optical and carrier-dynamic properties in single crystals and orientation-controlled thin films. It is part of a collaborative project with FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg funded by SNF and DPG.
Key responsibilities
- Perform Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, including polarization- and temperature-dependent measurements, to study structural, vibrational and optoelectronic properties.
- Characterize optical properties and carrier dynamics using time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), terahertz spectroscopy and transient absorption.
- Develop and apply data-analysis approaches to correlate results from complementary characterization techniques.
- Collaborate with synthesis, theory and device partners, and publish and present results in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences.
Required profile
- Master's degree in physics, materials science, chemistry, nanoscience or a closely related field.
- Strong interest in optical spectroscopy, semiconductor physics and low-dimensional or quantum materials.
- Excellent written and spoken English; willingness to collaborate across institutions and to undertake a research stay abroad.
- Self-motivated and organized, able to work independently in an interdisciplinary, international team.
Required skills
- A plus: hands-on experience with Raman, photoluminescence, time-resolved spectroscopy, cryogenic measurements or semiconductor characterization.
- An asset: experience with quantitative data analysis and programming (e.g. Python or MATLAB).
What we offer
- Fully funded, full-time (100%) PhD position for three years, starting 1 March, in Dübendorf near Zurich.
- Enrolment at the University of Basel.
- Access to state-of-the-art materials-characterization infrastructure and strong opportunities for scientific training, conferences and career development.
Applications must be submitted online through the employer's job portal with a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two references; applications by e-mail or post will not be considered.
