PhD Researcher, AI-Assisted Generative Design of Compliant Mechanisms
CSEM · Neuchâtel
Job description
About the role
CSEM and the Engineering Design and Computing Laboratory of ETH Zurich are seeking a doctoral researcher to investigate how AI and advanced computational methods can support the design of high-performance optomechatronic systems, anchored in compliant mechanisms. The project builds on the CAM2S2 thesis framework and develops AI-assisted methods that combine physics-based models, simulation data and engineering knowledge, with the exact plan refined with the candidate and supervisors. The position is primarily based at CSEM in Neuchâtel, with time spent at ETH Zurich.
Key responsibilities
- Formulate focused research questions and establish benchmarks against existing analytical, numerical and engineering workflows.
- Develop computational models, algorithms and research software with reproducible data and version control.
- Design numerical experiments, assess model validity and quantify uncertainty.
- Work with specialists in mechanics, systems engineering, AI, manufacturing and testing at CSEM and ETH Zurich.
- Validate methods against higher-fidelity simulations and experimental evidence.
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
- Transfer useful methods into engineering tools and document them for reuse.
Required profile
- Master's degree in microtechnology, mechanical engineering, computational science and engineering, applied mathematics, computer science, robotics or a closely related field.
- Strong foundation in computational mechanics and numerical modelling, including finite element analysis.
- Understanding of multidisciplinary optomechatronic or mechatronic systems.
- Rigorous scientific reasoning, independence, creativity and clear written and spoken English.
- Advantageous: machine learning, surrogate modelling, optimisation, uncertainty quantification, reduced-order modelling, compliant mechanisms, design for additive manufacturing, CAD and parametric modelling experience.
Required skills
- Solid programming skills, preferably in Python and/or a compiled scientific computing language.
- Finite element analysis and numerical modelling.
- Physics-informed surrogate or reduced-order models, inverse and multi-objective design methods.
What we offer
- A doctoral project at the intersection of fundamental methods and real-world engineering applications.
- Joint supervision by CSEM and ETH Zurich, with access to simulation and test capabilities.
- A multidisciplinary, international environment and the chance to publish and turn research into engineering tools.
- Attractive employment conditions and access to the ETH Zurich doctoral ecosystem, subject to admission requirements.
Applications require a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates and transcripts, a short description of one research or software project, and contact details for two referees. Applications are evaluated on scientific potential and depth of fundamentals.
