R&D Engineer – Mechanical Design (80-100%)

About the role

ABB is looking for a motivated R&D Engineer to join its Critical Power Agile Unit in Quartino, Switzerland. You will drive the life‑cycle management of critical power equipment, from concept development to prototype testing and product improvement.

Key responsibilities

• Develop mechanical design deliverables and documentation for new or enhanced critical power equipment.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally to deliver high‑quality designs that meet customer and project requirements.
• Participate in design reviews, provide feedback, and implement necessary modifications.
• Design, release, and support the fabrication of mechanical prototypes, leading post‑fabrication improvement cycles.
• Identify and lead design improvement opportunities to reduce product cost.
• Translate conceptual designs into detailed engineering documentation and maintain existing product designs.
• Work with production, supply chain, service and other business areas to ensure solutions meet overall business needs.

Required profile

• University degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
• Proficiency with solid‑modeling CAD software (e.g., Creo).
• Strong collaborative attitude and excellent written and spoken English.
• Knowledge of sheet‑metal design, detailed part and assembly drawings, and design‑for‑manufacturing principles.
• Familiarity with structural simulation and PLM tools is a plus.
• Understanding of electrical safety standards (UL/IEC) is a plus.
