Return Counsellor

About the role

The Return Counsellor provides specialised return counselling to asylum seekers in the Federal Asylum Centre (FAC) in Altstatten and, when needed, in other centres across East Switzerland and Zurich airport. Working under the Chief of Mission and in close collaboration with the State Secretariat for Migration, the role supports the Senior Project Associate in coordinating return activities across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver comprehensive return counselling and information on Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration (AVRR) to asylum seekers.
• Coordinate safe travel arrangements with Swiss authorities (SEM, SwissREPAT) and support vulnerable cases.
• Prepare travel documents in partnership with SEM for migrants lacking them.
• Maintain case records in eRetour and Mimosa databases and contribute to project reporting.
• Liaise with IOM Bern, consulates, and other partners to ensure smooth information flow and cooperation.

Required profile

• University degree (Bachelor’s or higher) in Social Work, Political Science, International Politics, Social Sciences or related field.
• Minimum three years of relevant professional experience, including project management and work with migrants or vulnerable groups.
• Fluency in German (native level) and English; French proficiency is an advantage.
• Experience working with UN agencies, government bodies or NGOs, preferably in Switzerland.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Familiarity with eRetour case management system.
• Knowledge of Mimosa case management system (asset).
