Safety Engineer – CMS Experiment Upgrade

About the role

As a member of the CMS Safety Office at CERN, you will lead safety‑related activities during the Long Shutdown 3, when the CMS detector and its infrastructure undergo major upgrades. You will ensure that fire extinguishing and safety monitoring systems are fit for purpose and support a safe working environment.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and supervise installation, integration and commissioning of safety infrastructure across underground and surface facilities on French and Swiss sites.
• Organise assembly, deployment and commissioning of the CMS environmental monitoring system.
• Lead technical review, consolidation, maintenance and follow‑up of CMS fire protection systems.
• Define, test and validate safety system logic, especially the CMS Alarm Action Matrix.
• Interface with Technical Coordination, sub‑detector teams and safety link persons to ensure coherent implementation.
• Support preparation and traceability of safety‑related deliverables and guide risk assessments.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of the safety framework at the CMS site.

Required profile

• Master’s degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Health, Safety & Environment Engineering or a related field.
• Safety Management certification (e.g., NEBOSH) is an advantage.
• Experience with fire protection systems or environmental monitoring systems.
• Extensive experience in installation, integration and commissioning of safety‑related technical systems, preferably in a complex, multidisciplinary environment.
