Senior Director, Global Medical Expert – Gene Therapies

About the role

Ultragenyx is seeking an experienced physician to lead medical affairs for its gene therapy portfolio across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The Senior Director will focus on rare diseases such as Mucopolysaccharidosis Type IIIA and Glycogen Storage Disease Type 1a, driving both pre‑approval access programs and post‑approval commercial implementation.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with EMEA and U.S. medical teams, Clinical Development, Safety, CMC, and Commercial leadership to enable patient access to one‑time gene therapies.
• Lead peer‑to‑peer interactions with external physicians, supporting site onboarding, education, and scientific exchange on safety, efficacy, immunomodulation and patient management.
• Develop and execute medical strategies for managed access programs and commercial launch in the EMEA region.
• Provide medical expertise to internal stakeholders and ensure compliance with regulatory and scientific standards.

Required profile

• Board‑certified physician with extensive experience in gene therapy clinical practice.
• Proven track record in medical affairs leadership within rare disease or gene therapy programs.
• Strong ability to operate in fast‑paced, cross‑functional environments and collaborate globally.
• Excellent communication skills for scientific exchange with key opinion leaders.
