Senior Electronics Engineer – Functional Safety
Amazon · Zurich
Job description
About the role
RIVR, an Amazon company, is building Physical AI by deploying autonomous robots for real‑world doorstep delivery. The robots operate daily in diverse urban environments, learning from millions of delivery scenarios while being purpose‑built for safety, reliability and the customer from day one.
Key responsibilities
- Design fault‑tolerant circuits for safety‑critical subsystems, selecting appropriate safety architectures (e.g., 1oo2, 1oo2D) to meet target SIL.
- Implement hardware diagnostics and monitoring mechanisms to detect dangerous failures and enforce a defined safe state.
- Apply common‑cause failure mitigation techniques at the component and PCB level.
- Perform FMEDA on schematics, calculate Safe Failure Fraction and Diagnostic Coverage, and build Reliability Block Diagrams to verify SIL metrics.
- Select and derate components based on failure‑rate data, mission profiles and expected lifetime.
- Advise system architects on hardware safety constraints and review PCB layouts for safety compliance.
- Collaborate with electronics, firmware and systems engineering teams to integrate safety functions into the robot design.
- Create and maintain functional safety documentation for hardware modules.
Required profile
- 5+ years of experience designing electronics hardware for functional‑safety‑certified products.
- Proven work under IEC 61508, ISO 13849 or ISO 26262, with delivered PCB‑level hardware achieving SIL 2 or SIL 3 (or equivalent PL d/e, ASIL B‑D) certification.
- Strong background in analog, power and mixed‑signal circuit design.
- Hands‑on experience implementing safety architectures in schematics, not just block diagrams.
- Ability to perform FMEDA and SIL metric calculations on own designs.
- Understanding of failure‑rate data sources and component derating for reliability.
- Master’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electronics or a related field.
Required skills
- Fault‑tolerant circuit design
- Safety‑critical architecture selection (1oo2, 1oo2D)
- FMEDA and SIL analysis
- Reliability Block Diagram creation
- Component derating based on failure‑rate data
- Safety‑rated ICs (safe supply supervisors, safety MCUs, smart drivers)
- PCB layout for safety (creepage, clearance, redundant routing)
- Circuit simulation using SPICE
