Senior Scientist / Postdoctoral Scientist in Malaria Vector Control Modelling

About the role

The Disease Modelling Group at Swiss TPH, associated with the University of Basel, is looking for a Senior Scientist or Postdoctoral Scientist (80-100% workload) to apply statistical and mathematical modelling and simulation to understand the impact of novel vector control interventions, with a focus on spatial emanators, on mosquito population dynamics, malaria transmission and disease burden. The position starts on 1 February 2027 for 2 years with an option of renewal.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, calibrate and analyse mosquito and malaria models
• Analyse entomological and epidemiological field data, including data from implementation studies and randomised control trials
• Calibrate models to entomological and epidemiological data
• Run, aggregate and analyse results of large simulation experiments using population-based and individual-based models
• Interact with epidemiological and entomological research partners
• Travel to partner field sites and conferences (about 3-5 weeks per year)

Required profile

• PhD in statistics, mathematics or a related discipline (e.g. quantitative epidemiology, ecology, modelling, computational biology)
• Interest in infectious disease modelling and vector ecology
• Ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals
• Ability to plan and deliver programmes of work to tight deadlines, independently and within interdisciplinary teams
• Good spoken and written English and presentation skills

Required skills

• Strong statistical modelling skills, preferably also mathematical modelling
• Programming in at least one of Python, R, Matlab or C/C++, with version control (Git) and high-performance computing clusters preferred
