Software Developer – Control Systems for CERN Experiments

About the role

You will join the team responsible for CERN's industrial control frameworks (JCOP and UNICOS) and help evolve them for upcoming LHC detector upgrades. The role focuses on developing software components, templates and tools on the Siemens WinCC OA SCADA platform.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and evolve the JCOP Framework used by LHC experiments.
• Implement and maintain software components, templates and tools based on WinCC OA.
• Integrate devices into supervisory control systems and design user interfaces.
• Prototype and test new solutions to improve reliability, maintainability and scalability.
• Assist experiments in deployment, maintenance and troubleshooting of their control systems.
• Participate in code reviews, debugging and troubleshooting activities.

Required profile

• National of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• Master’s degree with 2‑6 years post‑graduation experience, or PhD with ≤3 years experience.
• Never held a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
• Proficiency in English or French and willingness to learn the other language.

Required skills

• C/C++ programming.
• Experience with WinCC OA and SCADA technologies.
• Knowledge of software engineering practices (Git, testing, CI/CD, documentation).
• Familiarity with Qt, Node.js or TypeScript is a plus.
