Critical Infrastructure Mechanical Engineer – Field Engineering

About the role

Amazon Web Services (AWS) designs, builds and operates the global cloud infrastructure that powers millions of customers. As a Critical Infrastructure Mechanical Engineer you will support AWS data centers from concept through construction, commissioning and ongoing operation, combining office‑based design work with hands‑on field activities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide engineering expertise for new data center designs, reviewing equipment submittals and ensuring compliance with regional standards.
• Lead root‑cause analysis and corrective‑action documentation for equipment failures.
• Own conceptual designs for upgrades that increase capacity, efficiency and sustainability.
• Coordinate with operations, construction, commissioning and product teams to maintain consistent, reliable services.
• Conduct engineering audits, on‑site visits and produce risk‑mitigation reports.
• Act as resident engineer during construction, supporting commissioning and turnover activities.

Required profile

• Strong engineering judgment with the ability to make recommendations amid uncertainty.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Organized, able to set priorities, meet deadlines and manage budgets.
• Experience managing engineering projects and consulting partners.
• Willingness to travel between data‑center sites and work in the field.

Required skills

• Mechanical or Electrical Engineering degree.
• Experience with mission‑critical facilities (data centers, power generation, oil & gas).
• Knowledge of building codes, construction drawings and equipment specifications.
• Familiarity with UPS, diesel generators, switchgear, PDUs, VFDs, transfer switches, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, CRAHs, fans and air economizers.
• Experience with EPMS/SCADA/BMS control systems.
• Data‑analytics, scripting and data‑querying skills.
